The Dirty Double is Mark A Kelly’s second book in his trilogy called The Scholars, about his college. life. He treats us to yet another comedy/drama as he pursues his dual major engineering and having fun. He introduces the characters he meets with humor and insight, including his wife-to-be.
The Dirty Double is half a duplex that his roommates rent at college. It is located across the street from the campus. Unfortunately, there is no furniture. They proceed to gather what they need by going out on trash day, picking up furniture along the city’s streets.
Their duplex acquired the name The Dirty Double, whether it is because the wild parties they threw or the look of the place, you decide. Whatever the reason, the place was called that by the college students for years to come.
Mark gets a weekend job working at a fancy Supper Club washing glasses behind the bar. The bar manager tells Mark he cannot drink on the job. “But it you want a drink, stay after work, you can drink all you want and it’s free.”
When Sully, the owner of the Supper Club, realizes that Mark is going to stay after work to have drink, he asks him if he would mind serving drinks to the hired help. “They are tired after working so hard all night.” When Sully is ready to close the place for the night, he thanks Mark and gives him a tip, which is four times what Mark made working that night. Sully also invites Mark to join him and the gang at an all-night restaurant down the road for a free breakfast.
Sully also encourages Mark to take time off to go to all the college dances, even telling him to take a bottle off the bar for the occasion. He also assures Mark that he can take off for all school breaks and vacations. And that his job will be waiting for him after the summer break.
Sully pays Mark enough to cover all his household expenses, tuition and entertainment. This is what the author called his “Full Ride Scholarship”
