In the years near 1000 A.D., the Vikings and their king, Sweyn Forkbeard, constantly attack Engla-lond. A weak king, Ethelred II, rules the Anglo-Saxons. He tries to pay off each Viking attack with a steep tax called the “Danegald,” but again and again the pagans return. A masked vigilante called the Golden Cross tries to aid the people of Engla-lond and rally them to warfare, but this rebel is constantly way-laid by the king’s most trusted advisor, Eadric Streona. Eadric Streona, Ealdorman of Mercia, is a charming master of the king’s court who always manages to get what he wants; but what he wants remains a mystery to all.
Ten short stories explore this setting through the eyes of ten different characters, from a blushing maid and bold mother to a daring soldier, an unready king, and many others. Some characters are fictional, but most are real figures of history. Altogether, the Lost Tales introduce the people who will fight, love, and betray each other until the rightful king claims the throne of Engla-lond in the complementary novel, "Eadric the Grasper."
While interconnected by the novel and each other, each story stands independently as a snapshot into this ancient world. This is a collection of all ten tales, previously released as individual ebooks.

I have read 8 of the 10 short stories, and will finish the remaining two. However I don't see myself reading the full length novels. I read a lot of historical fiction and these stories have memorable characters and lots of absorbing action. What is irritating however, is the use of modern day language in a period of time that doesn't have sayings like "be proactive" and "hey!" There were other glaring errors, such as in the story about Hastings, his horse is referred to as a stallion, but then Hastings kicked "her" in "her" flank to make her move. The editing just leaves a lot to be desired and the lack of authenticity in the story-telling takes is distracting and takes away from the mood of the period of time in which the story takes place. Unfortunate because these books could potentially have been much better.Product details

Lost Tales of Mercia Sons of Mercia edition by Jayden Woods Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The first few pages caught my interest and imagination and would not let go! Couldn't put it down!
Disappointing and dis-jointed.
The stories were good bit I did not care for the way it left you hanging. I would rather pay more for a complete story than get nickel and dined from one book to another just to read the whole story.
The stories themselves were interesting, jut didn't like the timeline jumping around with each chapter.
stories that suppose to give a complete picture but failed to do it
I've loved this book since I first came across it 6 years ago. It's one of those books that you can go back and read and reread and still find something that you missed before. Hence why I bought it again! -)
Some historical names and places but overall these stories are very simple and not very interesting in my opinion. Also some read like medieval romance.
